The Festival of Lights

Chnukah. Lighting candles, reciting the blessings.

Chanukah, a “minor”, rabbinical holiday. It’s not even mentioned in the Torah! But how could it be a minor holiday, when it so brightly proclaims a miracle of the G-d of Israel!

Blessed are You, Lord our G-d, King of the universe, Who performed wondrous miracles for our ancestors, in those days, at this moment.

We celebrate the Maccabees, their fight against Hellenization, so Judaism could survive.

Maybe as a “Yay, something fun is about to happen!” tradition my right wrist is broken… again. What can I say… Peter Pan, here I come! Provided there will be a driver available. Sigh.

One of the perks or disadvantages of growing up in this household is my children not believing that the Batmobile is not acvtually part of the song “Jingle Bells”. Or that no one tells them to act more reverent when they sing their Chanukah candle lighting blessings Barenaked Ladies style.

Happy Hanukkah to you as well. I thought of a story after reading your comment. During my undergrad, I worked as a stage manager at a community theater. A production of Pirates of Penzance was playing and the main character had a line after walking up to a cave to the affect of, “Hush hush not a word. I see a light inside.” After about of week of shows, he would nightly change the line, “Hush hush not a word. I smell a light inside.” or “…taste a light…” or any other adjective. It was hard to keep the cast from laughing out loud most nights.

I hope your wrist heals quickly and well.
Lights…they bring me joy and hope…especially candlelight.

Thank you! I saw your email, and thank you for that as well! There is a lot of joy in winter… really in every season. I’m known to say “Oh I love winter!” “Spring is my fave! “Summer is my favourite season!” “There’s nothing better than autumn!” Of course, I can equally hate all seasons as well.
