Adoption: Why Not Serbia?

Serbia is a country I have been to many times. It borders Hungary on the South, and has a large ethnic Hungarian minority. My family often crossed over from Szeged to shop, to play tourist in lovely Szabadka (for us, Hungarian speakers: Subotica for everyone else).  And to visit orphanages. We took donations and special ed teachers, and doors opened. We saw kids, many of who were available for adoption, few of who were available for international adoption.

Serbia is a clean, fast and cheap place to adopt from. To find out more details, go and check Leah’s new blog. She has adopted twice from there, and she knows the process really well.

Serbia doesn’t allow photolistings. They peovide information on several children when you make the request to adopt, but not before. This makes Serbia unpopular with certain agencies and so called child matching ministries. Please. Don’t forget the waiting children of Serbia.

What are you thoughts about adopting from China? Obviously, I’m a fan but I’d love to hear from you about it.

I know nothing about China. I mean I know about China, I know nothing about the adoption process from there. I have friends who adopted from there, and I think they had good experiences. Vietnam is the secret corner of my heart, though.

Vietnam is the not so secret corner of my stomach. John texts me from Vietnamese restaurants just to taunt me. I thought adoptions from Vietnam had been stopped. Is that so?

  3. Christina says:

Hoping to adopt myself someday. I’ll keep Serbia in mind.
