For Annie (if she ever comes this way)

9 Sic ergo vos orabitis: [Pater noster, qui es in cælis,

sanctificetur nomen tuum.

10 Adveniat regnum tuum;
fiat voluntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra.

11 Panem nostrum supersubstantialem da nobis hodie,

12 et dimitte nobis debita nostra,
sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris.

13 Et ne nos inducas in tentationem,
sed libera nos a malo. Amen.]

I once was a bad Catholic. A bad Catholic, like now I am a bad Jew, and in between I was a bad Mormon. I even had a first communion, and I was a step away from confirmation. Of course, for me, that would have been just going with the flow. I can count on one hand how many times I went to confession, and I used to hide science texts in my prayer book or hymnal to read during Mass as I was always bored with it and considered it a waste of time. Nowadays I gotta check my boys’ sidur every time we go to shul, because I can never be sure they won’t do the same thing. Not that I’d take it away from them, but possibly I’d just leave them home. But that’s beside the point.
For a while as a teen I used one of the Catholic churches as my secret studying place. And this church celebrated a Latin Mass once a month. There was something beautiful about the Latin… Not that I’m not all for Vatican II when it comes to Catholicism, but the same way the Hebrew of a Jewish meeting is magical, so is the Latin of the Catholic Mass.
